The truth about "someday"

Are you still looking forward to "someday" that you’ll be lean and fit?

Do you tell yourself that you’ll start getting healthy tomorrow? Or maybe next week?

After just one more special event and one more important activity…

Then you’ll commit yourself to eating healthy and exercising regularly, right?

Although we have all done it, this way of thinking is a sneaky little trap.

You see, when you put off healthy living to some undesignated day in the future, you’re putting the responsibility of action on your future self. Tricky, since your future self doesn’t even exist yet.

Only you, in the present moment, are capable of taking action.

Being fit and lean is the result of thousands of healthy choices – all made in the present moment. (Let that sink in.)

So give your future (fictional) self a break, and start making real, tangible progress towards your goal – right now, in this moment!

What is something you can do RIGHT NOW to become healthier?

I like to think of it as a "5 minute action", but it could take less than that (or more time, if you choose).

For example, if you're feeling stressed, you could take 3 deep breaths to calm your nervous system: Inhale 4 counts, then exhale through your mouth like a sigh for 8 counts, then repeat. Use positive self-talk to affirm the action by saying something like, "I am calm and centered."

Or, you could stand up and march in place, stretch and move your body in whatever ways feel good. Add a positive statement to make this activity more powerful for habit change, something like, "I feel good when I move my body."

Another way that you can take action NOW is to make a decision RIGHT NOW that will lead you to a healthier lifestyle, then use empowering self-talk to support that decision.

For example, you might decide that you will drink more water on a regular basis. Your self-talk could be something like, "I drink 3 quarts of water every day because everything in my body works better when I am well hydrated." Follow up the decision and statement with a big swig of filtered water and feel great about your decision and your action.
