Feeling Stuck?

Do you feel stuck?

Do you have fitness goals but can't seem to get there?

You want to be fit. You know how much you want to weigh and your healthy goal size. You can even picture how great those jeans will look on your healthy and fit body! You know what to do... eat right and exercise regularly.

But why haven't you been able to get to your goals? (yet)

There are many complex reasons that make weight loss a challenge, reasons that go deeper than simply calories-in versus calories-out.

I’m talking about the mindset and beliefs that get in the way of success.

Here are 5 common mindset "obstacles" and the solutions to overcome them:

1. It will be hard...

It’s in our DNA to avoid pain and seek out pleasure. Unfortunately, this works against us when trying to get fit. In your mind, it’s "painful" (or at least uncomfortable) to deny yourself the tasty food that you crave and to exert yourself with exercise.

There’s a simple way to work around this obstacle: Find something "painful" about being out of shape to motivate yourself towards healthy eating and exercise. Focus on the negative impact your body has on your health, self-esteem and lifestyle. Convince yourself that the "pain" of being out of shape is much greater than the discomfort of losing weight.

2. I won't have any fun for a long time...

Just as we wish to avoid pain, we are also experts in seeking out pleasure—namely food. This served the cavemen well, but these days it ends up as extra pounds around our waist and thighs.

There’s good news: extra calories are not your only option to stimulate the pleasure center of your brain. Find an activity or two that make you smile and indulge in those regularly.

A walk outside A good book A great chat with a friend A hot bath with essential oils

You can also retrain your brain to crave the pleasure of exercise-induced endorphins. That's the best "feel good" drug!

3. I'm just too busy right now...

Let’s face it, many people work a lot, over-commit, take care of others, and don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. This fast-paced life leaves them exhausted, stressed and hungry for comfort food. Some people feel "too busy" to take care of their own health!

It’s time to reprioritize. Let go of any perfectionist standards or "all or nothing thinking" and remove a few commitments from your schedule so that you are able to prepare healthy meals, exercise regularly and get a good night’s sleep every night. Remind yourself that taking care of your health is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.

4. I don't deserve it...

You deserve to live the good life in the body of your dreams. Take a moment to think back on any times you have self-sabotaged your weight loss/fitness efforts. Release any feelings of unworthiness. Deep down inside, you must believe that you deserve to be healthy and fit. Remind yourself of why this is important to you and why you are deserving of it.

Take the time to take care of yourself. You DO deserve it.

5. It's kind of scary...

Many people are afraid to start because they might fail, (again) and wouldn’t that be embarrassing? Or many they're afraid to start because they just might succeed, and change makes us uncomfortable – even if it’s change in the right direction.

When you decide to get healthy and fit, you will need to go through some changes:

New eating habits New exercise routine New/different friends New clothes New self-image

Focus on all of the ways that losing weight and getting in shape will make your life better. Envision that better life everyday so that it goes from being "new and scary" to being "familiar and comfortable".
